Trick or Treating is a great way to enjoy fun physical activity while enjoying your community and it's important to stay mindful and focus on safety. Here are some helpful tips and reminders for both adults and kids:
- Always walk in groups or with a trusted adult
- Any costumes with swords, knives and sharp accessories should be short, soft and flexible
- Ensure that any hats, scarves or ties are secure so that they will not impede children's vision
- Reflective tape should be worn at all times so that drivers can see you
- Always have a flashlight and remember to WALK between houses, not run. It's easy to miss uneven sidewalks and curbs
- Always cross the street at intersections using crosswalks
- Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls
- Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours
- If using face makeup for costumes, be sure to use hypoallergenic makeup and avoid the eyes. Have wipes handy to clean your child's face should it begin to melt or run down their face during the course of the evening. If using false eyelashes be sure to follow the instructions.
- If you are wearing colored contacts with your costume, be smart about it! Never purchase them without a prescription and make sure you use as directed to avoid infections or other harmful issues.
All of us at Allendale Family Vision wish you a fun and safe Halloween!
