Create the Perfect Vision Board for 2020

The start of a new year is a great time to create a family vision board! Allendale Family Vision is pretty sure that with this year being "20/20", there is LITERALLY no better time to nail down a CLEAR VISION for the upcoming year.

We make it a point to sit together around at the start of each new year. To talk about our successes, challenges and goals for the year past - then have the same conversation for the year ahead. We write it down, make lists and then create a family vision board. It's a fun, thought provoking and inspiring activity that sets the tone for the next 12 months.

As we dive into 2020, the new year - the new decade, we encourage you all to do this exact same thing. Talk. Talk as a family, set goals as a family and put it all into one place that really brings it all together. Hang your new vision board on your kitchen wall, in the family office, anywhere really - just as long as you can see it each and every day.

Here's how to make a family vision board:

Brainstorm with your family

Think of what you would like to accomplish as a family in the upcoming year. Have everyone make a list of ideas and then share your ideas with each other. Narrow down all of the ideas to a few that you decide as a family are the most important to focus on. Like taking charge of yours and your family's health, for example, by getting yearly eye exams and making sure everyone's vision really IS 20/20!

Gather supplies

You do not need much for your vision board ... and there are no rules! Here is a suggested list of supplies -- but be creative! You can use whatever materials you'd like.

  • A poster board, large foam board or a bulletin board and thumbtacks
  • Magazines and pictures
  • Stickers, glitter, trinkets, washi tape and embellishments
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors

Look for inspiration

Now the fun part! Find pictures, words, or sayings among the magazines and pictures you've collected that remind you of your family's goals and bring you inspiration.

Tip: It works best to cut out all the items you'll need for your board first and then do all the arranging and taping on your board all at the same time.

Tape or glue your cutouts onto the board

Now that you have all of the items you want to place on your board, it's time to put them in place. I always group pictures that are alike in some way -- for instance, all travel pictures go together. Organizing this way helps when you're looking at your goals on your board daily.

Tip: Start gluing or taping on the bigger pictures first. These take up more space and help fill up your board. It's easier to put smaller pictures on top and rearrange the smaller images.

Add stickers and embellishments

Stickers, gems, a border... the sky's the limit.

Display in your house for your whole family to see

Like I said, this may be the most important step. See, this board is not magic. But there is magic in making it together and having it somewhere that you will see it every day.

Looking at it daily will remind you that your family of what is most important this year.

Making your vision board become a reality takes a lot of hard work -- by everyone! But as a family, you've taken the first step by identifying your goals and creating the board. Now imagine how much fun this time next year will be when your board has come to life.
