The Importance of Physical Movement and Dance Class

By Toni Garcia, Publisher & Editor February 26, 2020

If your child is anything like mine, they perform in the living room, create dances and puppet shows, run for what seems like hours on end in the bitter cold and dig holes in the yard. In today’s age, it’s easy to look away and allow screen time but making sure your child is moving, physically active and engaged in creative play should be a top priority.

One of the best decisions I’ve recently made as a parent is to enroll my daughter into dance classes at Lake Michigan Dance Academy in Allendale. Not only does she love her time there but she’s also improved her flexibility and coordination. It’s proven that dance can increase and improve balance, range of motion, stamina, muscle tone, strength and posture - and making sure these things are attended to at a young age is key.

We moved to Allendale from Colorado just under two years ago and being new to the community, it took awhile for my kids to branch out and make new friends. Seeing my children interact with others at the dance studio has been incredible. My boys wait while my daughter is in class and because of this time, they’ve all made friends in our community. The giggles, inside jokes and endless laughter warms my heart.

When kids participate in dance classes and increase their level of physical fitness, they may feel emotionally and mentally more positive, as well. When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins that trigger positive feelings. Dance also encourages kids to release their inhibitions and build confidence, creating a higher appreciation of their self image.

Without a doubt, dance requires a certain level of focus and practice. Kids can learn to focus their movements, control their emotional energy, and practice to achieve higher goals. These skills can help a child’s emotional well-being in school as well.

Think it’s time to explore enrolling your child into dance at Lake Michigan Dance Academy but are unsure of where to start? With the exception of Creative Beginner classes, student leveling is based on a combination of age and ability. Since the leveling structure varies from studio to studio, prior studio leveling may not correlate to the most appropriate level for the student at Lake Michigan Dance Academy. Parents can register their children via online registration software by clicking here. The team at LMDA is more than happy to assist with this process over the phone. In addition, they can provide a hard copy form if parents prefer this method. Parents are asked to email or drop off the form at the studio.
